Visit Çavuşin for the abandoned cave village and the church in the cliff. Stay only if you want a quiet strip on the Göreme–Avanos road. Stay in Göreme if you need the Open Air Museum on foot. Stay in Avanos if the river and the wheel are the point. Balloon pickup from Çavuşin is standard. Most guests need one to two hours, not a hotel move.

This is not an empty secret. Photographers already know the facade. What you buy by coming is the old village and a short walk — not a second Göreme with fewer menus.

The old village and why it emptied

The cliff face is the old Çavuşin — rooms stacked in tuff, some already open to the sky. People moved down to the new village in the mid-20th century because the rock was coming down. That is the story. It is also the safety rule: look, walk the used paths, do not invent a tunnel.

Closed shoes. Water in summer. Midday glare is ugly and hot. Early or late. I will not call this a “living archaeological site”. It is a failed hillside people left, with a church still worth the steps.

The church in the cliff

The large rock church above the old village is the climb. Views over the road and the valleys. Go when the light is low. I will not print a 2026 ticket price or a fresco inventory — both get misquoted. If the gate is closed, the facade and the village are still the visit.

Do not stack this climb on the same morning you fly. Legs and heat are not a personality test.

Balloon from Çavuşin

Pickup from Çavuşin hotels is on our list. You still choose Göreme, Çat or Soğanlı on the calendar. Our 22 August 2026 Göreme list is typically €70–€220, September–October €169–€219. Watching from the ground is €15.

Valleys from here

Çavuşin sits between Göreme and Avanos. Rose Valley and Red Valley are the walks people attach to this stop. Love Valley is Red-circuit geography, not a sidewalk from the church. Daylight, water, shoes. July cooks. January ices.

Horse and jeep use this corridor as an afternoon. They are fillers, not a substitute for the old village. Horseback · jeep safari.

Where to sleep (without a sponsored list)

A handful of cave houses and small hotels sit on the road and against the rock. Pay for quiet and a door a van can find at 04:35. Ask rock vs wallpaper. Ask whether you need a taxi for dinner — you often will. Breakfast after a 07:20 drop matters more than a cave Instagram wall.

Who should not stay: first-timers who want six restaurants and the museum on foot, anyone who thought “hidden gem” meant empty, anyone who plans to climb into cracked rooms for a reel. Sleep here if the quiet road is the point. Visit if you already have a bed in Göreme.

Families: the old village is steps and loose rock, not a playground. Shared balloon ages stay 5–80. Do not put a child into a cracked doorway for a photo. The watching tour is €15 if someone in the room should stay on the ground.

Pickup and getting here

From Göreme the car is about five minutes. Avanos is the next town toward the river. NAV ≈ 40 minutes. ASR ≈ 1 hour. Pre-book transfers if this is your first night. A road walk from Göreme is possible; it is not the valley hike, and it is not for luggage. Midnight arrivals belong in a booked car, not a hope at the airport rank.

Red Tour and this road

Red runs the north chimneys and Avanos. Çavuşin is on that road. The voucher may not include the church. If you care about the old village, go yourself — taxi from Göreme, or a leftover afternoon after Paşabağ. Red Tour. Green is Ihlara and Kaymaklı; it does not replace this cliff. Green Tour.

When to come

April–June and September–October are the comfortable walking months. Summer: early or late only. Winter: quiet, cold, ice on the steps. September–October is also peak Göreme balloon cells. Month tables: best time.

A spine I would book

1. Sleep Göreme unless you picked Çavuşin for the quiet. Taxi over for the old village and the church.
2. If you sleep here: two or three nights, balloon morning one, village late on another day, Red or Green as a day out.
3. Stay on used paths. Do not collect both castles, this cliff, and a balloon on the same legs.

Çavuşin is the abandoned cliff. Göreme is the hub. Avanos is the river. Visit the one you did not sleep in.
