Yes. A Cappadocia hot air balloon is safe when it is a licensed aviation flight and the morning briefing allows it. It is not a theme-park ride someone can “push through” because you already paid. On Skyway, if the weather call is no, we rebook or refund. We do not put a basket up to protect a booking.

That is the only honest short answer. The rest of this page is how that answer is enforced — who signs the licence, who can cancel the valley, who we will not take, and what we will not invent (including a fake accident statistic).

Who is allowed to fly a balloon here

Commercial balloons in Cappadocia sit under the Turkish Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM / DGCA). That office licenses the company, licenses the pilot, and issues the morning permission. If the permission is not there, the valley does not go up. A licensed operator cannot override that call because a hotel is full or a guest is leaving tomorrow.

I will not call this “the strictest system in the world”. I will call it what it is: civil aviation, not tourism theatre. The basket is an aircraft. The person on the burner has a licence to renew and a medical to pass. You are not flying with a hobbyist who bought a used envelope.

Çat and Soğanlı are not a cheaper safety class. They are different valleys under the same licence. The price difference is demand and the view — we published those numbers on the 2026 prices guide.

The morning weather call is the safety feature

Flights leave in the dark so you are in the air at first light, when the wind is usually at its quietest. The same valleys that make the photos also make the wind local. A safe Göreme morning can be an unsafe one a week later with the same forecast app on your phone.

Typical no-go reasons:

• Wind above the limit, or a direction that will put baskets into terrain
• Rain, storm cells, or a sudden pressure drop
• Low cloud or visibility that hides landing fields

When that call is no, licensed companies stop together. That is why a cancelled morning feels widespread. It is supposed to. The unsafe version of Cappadocia is the lobby offer: “another company is still flying, come now.” If the valley is closed, it is closed.

What we do when the morning is cancelled

1. We contact you as soon as the decision is in. Keep the phone on. Hotel Wi-Fi is a bad place to wait for WhatsApp.
2. You take the next available sunrise or a full refund.
3. If you cannot stay, take the refund. Do not let someone walk you to an unlicensed basket.

That is also how SHGM cancels work on the private flight: if aviation authorities stop the morning, there is no cancellation fee. Guest no-shows or guest cancels inside 24 hours are a different rule — those are not refundable. All cut-offs are Cappadocia local time.

What the morning actually looks like

Pickup is in the dark. In summer that can be 04:00–05:00; in winter it is later because sunrise is later. The driver is looking for the hotel name you typed, not the nickname on your Airbnb chat. If you are in a cave house with no sign, send a pin the night before.

At the field: check-in, a short briefing, snacks, then you watch the envelope inflate. You get in when the crew says, not when the cameras start. The flight is 40–65 minutes on the shared product, 45–60 on the private one, then a landing, non-alcoholic champagne, and a certificate. Souvenir photos are extra. Tips are extra and optional.

The private ticket includes full passenger insurance in the listed inclusions. The shared ticket is still a licensed commercial flight — do not read “insurance named on one page” as “the other flight is uninsured”. Read the option you bought. If a third-party seller cannot say who the operator is, stop.

Questions to ask any seller — including us

1. Who is the licensed operator, by name?
2. What happens, in writing, if SHGM or the weather call stops the morning?
3. What is the age line, and will you turn a child away at the field?
4. Is pickup included from my hotel, or only from Göreme centre?
5. Which valley am I actually flying — Göreme, Çat, or Soğanlı?

If the answer to (2) is “we always fly” or the answer to (1) is a shrug, the price is the least interesting number on the quote. Landing, the basket, and what you must do

The ride itself is quiet. The burner is loud in short bursts. The ground is the part people remember with their knees.

Before you leave the field the crew briefs the landing: hold the handles, bend your knees, stay in the basket until they say out. The basket can bump, tilt or drag a short way. That is a landing, not an accident. Jumping out early is how ankles get hurt.

In the air: closed shoes, nothing loose over the side, no sitting on the rim for a photo. Layers — the field at 05:00 is cold even in August. We do not provide a wheelchair lift into a shared or private basket. If you cannot stand for the flight and the landing, book the watching tour.

Who should not fly — our actual limits

These are the lines on our tour pages, not a generic “ask your doctor” paragraph.

• Age 5–80 on the shared Göreme / Çat / Soğanlı flight. Children must stand and follow the briefing. A five-year-old who cannot hold on is not “almost fine”.
• Age 5–65 on the private balloon. Children under 6 are generally not accepted on that product even though the numeric minimum is 5 — the crew will turn a very small child away at the field. Do not surprise them.
• Pregnancy and serious heart or medical conditions: not recommended. We will not argue this at 05:00.
• Wheelchair users: the flight is not accessible. The watching tour is, and service animals are allowed there.
• Group size on the shared product is capped at 100 travellers across the operation that morning, not 100 in one basket. Baskets are much smaller.

If the flight is the problem and the sunrise is not, the watching tour takes infants on laps and does not have a 5–80 aviation limit.

Accidents — what I will and will not say

Cappadocia puts up a large number of balloons on a clear peak-season morning. Serious incidents are uncommon next to that volume. After the ones that have happened, the rules got tighter, not looser: more weather holds, more permission control, more attention on who is allowed in the basket.

I will not publish a precise “X accidents per year” or “safer than driving to the airport” line. Those numbers get copied from blog to blog without a named source. If you want a statistic, ask for the source. If a seller uses a scary or soothing number to close you, walk away.

The practical test is simpler: licensed operator, morning call, written weather refund. Fail any one of those and the price is irrelevant.

How to keep yourself safe as a guest

1. Book a company that names the operator and puts the weather refund in writing. Skyway’s is on the tour page: weather = rebook or refund; you cancel inside 24 hours = no refund.
2. Give the hotel name the way it is written on the map. Pickup is in the dark. A wrong pin is how people miss the briefing.
3. Say so if you cannot stay a spare morning. We would rather put you on a valley that can move, or on the watching tour, than sell you a Göreme date you cannot repeat.
4. Wear closed shoes. Listen. Hold on. Get out when they say, not when the camera wants you to.
5. Do not buy a “still flying” substitute after a valley-wide cancel.

Is it worth the residual risk?

Every flight has residual risk. So does the minibus to the viewpoint. The difference is that a licensed balloon morning can be switched off. That switch is the reason I sleep. I would rather you miss the sky and keep the refund than fly a cheap basket that ignored the call.

If the ticket is the obstacle, change the valley or the month — that is a price problem, and it has a page. If standing in a basket is the obstacle, watch from the ground. If someone promises both a rock-bottom Göreme seat and a guaranteed takeoff in April wind, they are lying about one of those things.
